Resilience

Resilience is how we bounce back after we have experienced setbacks, something challenging or have failed in something.

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up” Nelson Mandela.

Acceptance that change is an unavoidable part of life.

Focus on what is in your control and what is outside your control.

Visualise the problem as a challenge to overcome, not a dead end or brick wall.

Face the problem head on and keep things in perspective. Can you see past the problem?

Set yourself some achievable short term and then long-term goals. This gives you direction past the challenge.

Having good relationships.

Having a good support system helps anyone in the most difficult of times.

Have a list of people that you know bring you a sense of comfort or inspire you to be your best. Who has previously helped you with a more helpful perspective?

Re connect with friendships & family.

Limit your time with negative people or the ones that bring you down emotionally and physically.

Understanding and identifying emotions

Understanding your emotions, build on your emotional intelligence.

There is a plethora of strategies that you can implement to deal with these thoughts and emotions such as, taking a break, deep breathing, listening to music, mindful walking, Yoga, exercise, reading a book, painting etc.

Building on your strength.

Write down your strengths and weaknesses such as:

Internal strengths (e.g. creativity, flexible, confidence)

Internal weaknesses (e.g. insecure, self-critical, shy)

External Strength (e.g. having great supports in family and friends)

External Weakness (e.g. financials or family dynamics)

How can you utilise your strengths and how can you improve on your weaknesses?

Keeping things in perspective is as simple as writing down and answering these four questions and having them somewhere visible for encouragement.

My goal is……

A positive affirmation that will help me daily is …….

Some days will be easier than others and I might feel…….

When I overcome the challenge or the goal I have set I will feel……

Final note, resilience is like any other skills or ability. It is a continued effort to upskill yourself, and what works for you may not work for another.
