Body Image

A very common thought that plays in a majority of peoples minds is their body image. Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and feel unhappy with what you see? Don’t worry you are not alone!

WHAT IS POSITIVE BODY IMAGE?

“…the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception.” (National Eating Disorders Collaboration)

So what does that all mean? Basically it is how you see, feel, think and behave about your body image.

HOW DO I IMPROVE MY THOUGHTS?

The cliché we all comes in different sizes, love the body you are in. Whilst it sounds good it is difficult to do. The only way to love your body is take action and according to National Eating Disorder Collaboration (2017) here are some tips….

  • Think about all your positive qualities, skills and talents.
  • Make sure you say positive things to yourself every day. Would you say to your friend “you are so fat?” then why say it to yourself? You deserve respectful comments and love.
  • If you notice negative self-talk…STOP!
  • Mindfulness, focus on your body and appreciate what it can do.
  • You can admire others but never compare.
  • Remember what you see on social media is either photo shopped or unrealistic.
  • Finally set goals for yourself on healthier eating habits that are realistic.

A LIST OF THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO….

There is a great deal of research that confirms that activities improve happiness. You can make your own list, but here are some that you can start with…

  • Number one as always is mindfulness such as meditation
  • Laughter is always good, so maybe go to a comedy movie or comedy show with a friend.
  • Sing out loud with music regardless if you know the words or not.
  • Treating yourself to a day spa and having a massage or facial. You can also make your own day spa at home using essential oils and candles, bath bombs with relaxing music.
  • Being adventurous and doing something out of your comfort zone.
  • Going for walks in nature such as hiking in the hills or park trails.
