Frequently Asked Questions

On making your first appointment we understand that it might feel slightly overwhelming. You might even want to cancel, and for this reason we have come up with some frequently asked questions to help ease the unexpected and first appointment nerves.

The first appointment is usually called the intake session. This is the time to fill in the “service agreement” and ask any questions you may have. During this time the counsellor will also go through the form with you and introduce themselves.

During your appointment you will also be asked various questions which will help your counsellor understand your background, present and future goals. Your counsellor will be able to get an understanding of what you are aiming to get out of the therapy sessions.

After the first session you may feel exhausted as you have reflected on your emotions and painful past experiences. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, however during this time it is important to not give up!This is progress, even though it does’t feel like it.

If a topic is too painful to discuss, it can be left for a later session when you are feeling up to it. Remember, counselling is in a relaxed, non judgemental space and only when you feel ready to talk is when the counsellor is there to listen and hold your space.

A counsellor is a trained professional that can help you identify underlying emotions that manifest into certain behaviours. You work together to identify these emotions and how to make changes to improve your well-being.

Counselling, according to Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) suggest:

“Psychotherapy and Counselling are professional activities that utilise an interpersonal relationship to enable people develop self understanding to make changes in their lives.”
